The transformative beauty of rain is captured in the sounds of raga Malhar. While the 2009 concert gathered compositions whose lyrics evoked the monsoon’s imagery and mood, this morning turns inward, tracing the streams of raga Malhar itself: its many variants, melodic identities, and shifting character from the powerful and dramatic to the serene and contemplative. The performance moves through Miyan ki Malhar, Gaud Malhar, Megh Malhar, and others, each interpreted through khayal, tarana, bandish, and more. The programme also draws on bhajans and semi-classical compositions inspired by rain, tracing how Malhar’s essence has travelled across genres, connecting people through the magic of the monsoon: the anticipation before the rain, the romance of it, and the particular ache of longing that only this season seems to carry.
